Abstract

In TMCP steel plate rolled at lower temperature than A_<r3>, the separation is apt to occur at fracture surface. But, a few years ago, it became clear that the brittle crack propagation-arrest characteristic of TMCP steel plate with higher maximum-separation index shows more excellent than that of TMCP steel plate with lower maximum-separation index. In this paper, we have conducted experimental research in order to clarify unsolved problems regarding the quantitative estimation for separation and to understand the effects of separation on the fracture toughness of TMCP steel plate. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1) In case of calculation of separation index, it is necessary to classify into three types called "a", "b" and "c" and then measure the total length for separations except type "c" with larger 0.5mm in length with a 10 times magnifier. 2) Occurence of the first separation is independent of temperature. 3) In TMCP steel plate with tendency to occur many separation, the absorbed energy and quantity of separation occurred are affected by the impact energy. 4) In TMCP steel plate with tendency to occur many separation, brittle crack is apt to propagate diagonally due to remarkable improvements in fracture toughness of rolling and normal directions, and as a result the brittle crack propagation-arrest characteristic is improved.
