Abstract

When a building, or a painting or a cinema, is observed, the observation distance and inclination make the observation easy or difficult. The purpose of the present study is a scientific clarification of the above reation and the theory of the "Fernbild und Nahbild" in the fine art. The study is consisted of the two part, the one is to observe frontally, the other is to observe obliquely. The former is stated in this paper, the latter shall be in the next paper. Suppose that a figure, whose shape is a square or a rectangular, is observed frontally, the difficulty of the observation may be shown by the time length to recognize the content of the figure, such that the long time indicates the increase of the difficulty. This study, measuring those times, proves the following facts that; the small distance makes the difficulty increase; the larger the distance, the easier to observe; and its variation is proportioned to the sdid angle, whose vertex is the eye, covering the figure; but when the eye goes across a certain limitting position, the difficulty becomes invariable. The limitting position is the solid angle of 0.154 steradian, and the visual angle of 22°40', and the 2.5 times distance of the figure's size.
