Description
Superheated steam (SHS) treatment was found to be very effective for conversion of cellulose to levoglucosan (LG). Yields of water soluble hydrocarbons (TOC) and LG were 88% and 42%. These values were much higher than those reported in the conventional pyrolysis methods. Two interesting phenomena were found. Firstly, the crystalline cellulose was efficiently converted to LG, while amorphous cellulose was almost inert. Secondly, the LG yield was significantly decreased in the presence of a trace amount of sodium, indicating that sodium would work as a negative catalyst for this reaction.
