Description
Catalytic etherification of glycerol to butyl ethers having applications as fuel additives with improved octane properties for diesel and biodiesel reformulation has not only opened up a new approach for glycerol utilization but also improved a process economics of biodiesel production. In this paper, we studied a montmorillonite clay (KSF/O) for the etherification of glycerol using t-butanol. KSF/O showed the highest glycerol conversion of > 95% and a product distribution containing mono- (MTBG), di- (DTBG) and tri-t-butylglycerol ether (TTBG) between several commercial clays. Study of reaction parameters showed that increase in catalyst loading as well as temperature enhanced the combined selectivity to DTBG + TTBG to the extent of 35%.
