Abstract
This lecture will introduce novel metal-free living cationic polymerizations that proceed via degenerative chain-transfer of propagating cationic species resulting from a small amount of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid to the dormant carbon–sulfur bonds of thioesters or thioethers and related covalent bonds. This system is effective for cationic polymerization of vinyl ethers, p-alkoxystyrene, and p-hydroxystyrene (p-vinylphenol) without protection of the phenolic functions. The thioester-chain end can be used for RAFT radical polymerization to enable the synthesis of block copolymers between cationically and radically polymerizable monomers.
