Abstract
We recently found that TiO2 catalyzed glycolysis of PET under microwave irradiation readily gave bis(2-hydroxyethyl terephthalate) (BHET) in high yield. And glycol under pressurized microwave also reacted with PET without TiO2. But in this glycolysis, by-products with a similar structure of BHET were found by NMR analysis. In the detail study, we found that ethylene glycol (EG) in the reaction mixture changed to diethylene glycol (DEG), and DEG also quickly react with PET in the reaction to give bis(2-hydroxyethyloxyethyl terephthalate) (BHEET).
