Description
In Japan, PET bottles have been collected by municipalities successfully. However, from the view point of recycle, there still remain some problems. Collected PET bottles contains foreign substances and sometimes poor quality. Therefore, we focused on PET bottle handling before disposal to improve the quality of collected PET bottles, in particular cap removal. The objective of this study is to investigate an impact of trash box design on cap removing and correct disposal of PET bottles and other wastes. Actually, we tested 6 types of trash box; One box/separated type, visibility/invisibility of the inside, and guide sign/no sign near disposal slot. One box/inside invisible/guide sign support type design showed highest cap removal ratio and low incorporation of foreign substances. This was also supported by the result of Web-base questionnaire. This study suggests that specific design of trash boxes can potentially give some impacts on PET bottle disposal behaviors.
