Abstract

In this paper, the fundamental aerodynamic characteristics of two edge girders are described, which have economical and structural advantages for future long span cable stayed bridges. Although it has been clarified that the inclined lower flanges and inside girder location of two-edge girders are effective for aerodynamic stabilization of two edge girders, in this study the aerodynamic mechanisms of their girder sections with these geometrical girder shapes are investigated by a series of wind tunnel tests. As one of conclusions, the inclined lower flanges with two edge girders play the same role on characterizing the aerodynamic stabilization of two edge girders as the locating girder inside from the edge sections. In addition, it is clarified that the more inside girder location of two edge girders makes aerodynamic instability on the contrary.
