Description

This study aims at examining effects of the use of four-dimensional data assimilation (FDDA) scheme and typhoon bogus (TB) data on the typhoon wind simulation with WRF (the Weather Research and Forecasting model). WRF is run 40 times in total for eight typhoons which brought strong winds of more than 20 m/s on Miyako Island in the last decade, and the simulated winds are validated against measurements at the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Miyakojima station. As a result, FDDA is generally found to have positive effects on the wind simulation and especially the grid nudging method reproduces winds more accurately than the spectral nudging. It is also found that the use of TB data has also positive effects on the wind simulation, and we thus conclude that using the grid nudging and TB data together is the best method for a typhoon wind simulation with WRF. But even the method is found to still have a problem, which is pointed out in the last part.
