Description

Corundum (corundum) is a mineral species name with the main chemistry composition and the structure type of α-Al2O3, and a ruby, sapphire, etc. to which it colored when the chromium, titanium, and iron of very small quantity are contained as a impurity, are a variety name. In order to use corundum as jewelry, transparency and a certain amount of size are called for. However, the corundum to which the quality of a color falls from the relation of generation conditions with so-called "GIUDA" produced in milk white and the impurities kind mixed in formation process was heat-treated due to raising its transparency and a color tone. The heat-treated corundum seems to circulate partly. There is an advantage, like the amount of circulation of this heat-treatment of the corundum as jewelry increases, it has also been a problem that the heat-treatment thing and the non-heat-treating thing are intermingled in circulation process. In this lecture, a crystal chemistry characteristic of a material having corundum type structure, and the coloring mechanism at the time of doping various changes metallic elements in corundum, and heat-treating by using spectroscopic methods such as Raman micro-spectroscopy and a cathode luminescence spectroscopy, will be introduced.
