Abstract

We propose a real-time water surface rendering method at the downstream of a river for landscape simulation. The proposed method divides the river wave model according to the distance from the viewpoint. In a short distance, we adopted Stokes wave as the wave model in order to express the wave in detail, and express the direction change of the wave by considering the reflection at the riverbank. On the other hand, in a medium and long distance, we attempted speed-up by using cosine wave as a simple model of the wave, and by quasi expression with bump mapping method. Also, wind effect is considered for all kinds of distance since it can be seen even in a long distance. As the result of our experiments, we have confirmed that a river can be rendered in real time for the river model composed of about 42,000 polygons.
