Abstract
It is necessary to avoid the salt water intrusion obstruction in pumping up the groundwater in the coastal aquifer. The present paper is described the formulation of the groundwater density flow, the analysis and the calculation method of an optimal recharge and discharge to avoid the salt water intrusion under the work of lowering groundwater level in the excavation area, and the applications of the optimal recharge and discharge. It is defined that the state where the total of absolute values of the recharge and discharge is minimum under the following constraints is optimal. (1) The groundwater level in the excavation area is less than the given groundwater level. (2) The tip of salt water wedge is not over the salt water intrusion limit line.
