Abstract

A hybrid mass damper (HMD) that combines a tuned mass damper with an actuator has excellent capability to supress vibration response of a high-rise building subjected to wind or earthquake loads. To clarify the characteristics of the HMD, the energy flow both in a building and in the mass damper has to be studied. In our previous study, the roles of each component of an HMD, a spring, a damper and an actuator, were studied from the view point of the energy flow. In this paper, further study on both the energy which enter the building and the energy flow in the HMD system is conducted comparing with a tuned mass damper (TMD) system and an active mass damper (AMD) system. It is also analytically examined how the natural frequency and the damping ratio of the HMD influence on the energy flow. Furthermore, shaking table tests using a six-story building model with a mass damper were conducted. These experimental results enhance the analytically studied energy flow.
