Abstract
This is the first report of the several series of investigations on the function of housing estate in human life. The purpose of this research is to find the proportion of social contact of the inhabitants with neighbourhood people among the whole. It is also a purpose to show how people expect of their social contact, especially in their neighbourhood. Actual survey was done to know the development of the social contact of the inhabitants to all adults in two groups living in 62 houses and 146 dwelling units in 5 "slab type" flats at Kori-Danchi, housing estate, Osaka during November and December in 1960 and 1962 respectively. Sociologist group joined us. Some of the results of the research are as follows: 1) Social contact in neighbourhood is dominant as for wives compared to her whole contacts, while it is not so as to husbands. 2) Much contact in neighbourhood is rather done in the private houses or dwelling units than in public facilities such as a meeting room, assembly-hall etc. 3) Assembly-hall is used rather by wives than by husbands. The features will be the same in future also. 4) People have, so to say, a feeling of "community" for the housing estate areas. 5) Generally speaking, it would be reasonable that a housing estate is to be designed as a "social community" for wives.
