Description

Taiwan’s tatami industry was introduced by Japan with most manufacturing techniques originated from the instruction of Japanese craftsmen. The author started conducting studies related to Taiwan’s tatami industry in 2009 and received grant from Interchange Association, Japan in 2014, with emphasis on the investigating the manufacturing techniques and culture of life for Japanese tatami as part of the research presentation. The study is a field research which intends to understand Japanese tatami industry and the legacy and status of the manufacturing techniques through the interview with seven craftsmen and businesses all over Japan. The research presentation can be reference to the development and technical interchange of tatami industry in Taiwan.
