A stone veneer finished curtain wall was developed. Stone was adhered and fixed to a steel curtain wall frame using silicone adhesive and metal fasteners. As the silicone adhesive was applied to the back surface of the stone, there was a possibility of contamination of the stone surface due to migration of silicone into the stone material, as this has occurred in past cases where silicone sealant has been used. Investigation was carried out to predict the depth of silicone migration and determine the effectiveness of using a cover primer applied between adhesive and stone surfaces to inhibit migration. Silicone migration was measured at micro areas of stone by chemical analysis. Based on this data, a theoretical study indicated that the migration could be analyzed as a diffusion phenomenon, and that prediction of migration depth was possible. From the above results, the effectiveness of a cover primer was evident and the possibility of long term prevention of contamination due to silicone adhesive was confirmed.
