A fail-safe structure against earthquake is defined as a system that comprises some subsystems having different dynamic characteristics in order to prevent the whole collapse. The benefit of such a fail-safe structure results from reduction of input energy of earthquake by changing its natural periods associated with subsystem failure away from the earthquake predominant period. Numerical analyses show that the resistance of fail-safe structure is kept more stable irrespective of the predominant period of earthquake than conventional structures which have single natural periods. It is also shown that the effect of the fail-safe is enhanced by larger difference of natural periods of the subsystems, keener shape of the earthquake energy spectrum, and less ductility of subsystems.
