Abstract

This paper addresses the lateral buckling behavior and the lateral bracing requirement of steel beams connected by buckling restrained braces, referred to as the knee brace damper(the KBD). Lateral buckling strength of beams connected by the KBD is lower than that of rigidly connected beams because of the difference of the moment distribution and the restriction at both ends. Major findings obtained from cyclic loading tests and numerical analysis are as follows; 1) the lateral buckling is prevented as long as the beam is retained in elastic range, 2) the concrete slab is effective to increase lateral buckling strength of the beam connected by the KBD, 3) the efficiency of the proposed lateral bracing requirement that ensure sufficient rotation capacity of the frame connected by the KBD is confirmed by numerical analysis.
