Abstract
The advantage of the mid-story isolation structures is their limited restrictions for various types of building plans while they provide high seismic performances. Therefore, new response prediction method for this type of structures is required in order to simplify design procedure. First, it is shown in this paper that the whole-body behavior of a mid-story isolation structure can be represented by that of a two-mass-system and a method of response prediction using the two-mass-system is proposed. By this method, in which the natural mode functions of the two-mass-system are incorporated into the energy-balance method by Akiyama, seismic responses of the isolation story and of the lower story that behave within the elastic rage are predicted. Then, the proposed method is verified by comparing the results based on the design energy spectrum by Akiyama with those obtained by time history analysis where parameters are natural periods of the lower structure, amount of the dampers in the isolation story, mass ratio of the upper structure, etc.
