Abstract
A new method of the laser welding of thermoplastic resin plates is developed to apply the laser welding process to welding of transparent resin plates. The welding surface of the transparent resin plate is textured in order to increase the absorptivity of laser beam at the treated area. Transparent PMMA is used for workpiece and sandpaper or sandblast is used for pretreatment of the welding surface. Laser diode of 820nm in wavelength is used for welding process. It is found that the laser welding of two transparent resin plates can be realized and the optical property of the welded region returns to transparent. However, clouded spots are left at the edge of the welded region. It is also found that the transparency of the edge of the welded region can be improved when the hot press is used for the pretreatment.
