Abstract
Material flow analysis has been applied to estimate flow and stock for materials in the world. However, applicability of traditional approaches heavily depends on data availability. To overcome this problem, we proposed a methodology for estimating steel stock based on satellite images. Previous studies have shown that satellite images of nighttime lights are closely correlated to human activities, such as electricity consumption, CO2 emission, GDP, which can also be linked to the amount of steel stock. This study uses nighttime light images in conjunction with GIS data such as land cover, which can farther refine the estimation.
