Abstract
The 226 old gardens left in Kyushu, made in the term from Jouko era to the end of Edo era, were investigated by the field survey, Most of these gardens were made in the middle and the end of Edo era, which may be the reason why the development of industry and transportation, and Sakin-koutai contributed to the progress in culture. Many of these gardens belong to the temples, high class Samurai, and feudal loads. These old gardens are left in a group in 13 areas, and each of groups has its own feature. Many gardens are pond-appreciation style ones having the emphasis on the pond, and have the style of ones to wander around or to appreciate the sight. The water is brought into the ponds by making use of the following: 1) The water from mountains; 2) Creeks; 3) Rivers; 4) Underground streams; 5) Springs. In Kyushu, the gardens having the style of Karesansui exist especially in Kagoshima and Okinawa, which appeared in Edo era.
