Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial structure of large urban parks applying Graph theory, and to consider the efficacy of Zoning method on planning and design of parks. We drew the graphs of the spatial structure of each 15 National Government Parks in Japan, consisting some vertexes as spaces designed by Zoning method and some edges as main paths between them. And we characterized these structures by defining Scale, Connection, Dispersion as the indexes of the total structures of the graphs, and Relation as the index of the hierarchy of each elements of the graphs.<BR>The results of this study are as follows;(1) Graph theory is an effective method on analyzing spatial structure of large urban parks.(2) We can find the characteristics of parks by comparing the Graph indexes.(3) Zoning of the parks have hierarchical structure and the planning by Zoning method tends to make the spatial structure to be complicated.
