We made an artificial wetland at Hiraoka Park in Sapporo, planting mire grasses there. Water tables from ground surface (upward +) ranged from −10 to 5 cm and kept stable except for the 10 to 30 cm-deep rise caused by heavy rains. The hydrochemical conditions of the wetland, such as flooding, neutral pH (6.0<), and high salinity (EC: 14 to 28 mS/m) were suitable not for bog plants but for fen plants. Seven grasses were transplanted both in a ground surface (0 cm plot) and in a 10 cm high hummock of coconut mat at each of the 40 sites. Sphagnum palustre and Menyanthes trifoliata grow better in the 0 cm plot, whereas others did not differ between both plots. Both fen and bog grasses could grow at some specific sites in the wetlands along the gradients of water level and pH. Most trees, weeds and naturalized plants were invaded exclusively in the arid area, whereas 7 mire plants also occurred in some places of the wetland. 15 out of 19 mire plants germinated from seeds sawn in the wetland in late autumn. A germination test revealed that many of the plants needed a cool and wet treatment. Therefore, planting an artificial wetland with fen plants can be promising.
