In Japan, especially in the field of landscape history, the term hanchi or hansui, which could be translated as a half pond or a half water, is applied to all the ponds that separate secular and sacred precints or that are themselves divided by a bridge. This paper supplies fundamental information on the hanchi, including its terminology as well as its archtectural development, and raises some questions related to its current definition.
