Description

At present, we have the only one environmental standard of bathing areas that can judge the hygienic water qualities. But recently, people have become to require pleasant bathing area and like to know the location of them. A new evaluation method will be required to find such pleasant bathing areas. The method must consideration of the amenities of the waters, beaches and hinterland areas into the standard.
Generally this type of amenity can be estimated by the psychological responses of users. Therefor the amenities of site were inquired of beach users at various types of bathing areas. The structure of the amenities was analyzed by the CATDAP which provides optimal combinstion of explanatory variables. The result provided the important physical features of the bathing areas. These physical features were traced to the physical quantities of the bathing area which were measured at the beaches. The effective physical quantities were selected to the amenitiy of the area by the method of multiple regression analysis.
On the other hand, some essential natural elements of bathing area were chosen by the committee of the authorities. They are colour of sand, amount of garbages, speed of tidal current and etc. And they also added the capacity of bathing facilities and level of access service.
The elements were classified and ranged in essential order and four steps of standard were proposed for the evaluation system of the pleasant bathing area. First step, beaches are judged by the essential natural elements of the bathing area that can not be easily improved by some engineering works. Second step, they were judged by the natural elements which can be improved by the works. Third step, the number of the bathing facilities are estimated. Fourth step, the level of access service are evaluated. If the beachs are unsatisfied with the first step, they are excluded from the bathin garea. And if they are unsatisfied with the second step, they are advised to improve some of natural conditions. And if they have not enough facilities of bathing and means of access, they are advised to satisfy these facilities. If they pass through the every steps, they are appraised as pleasant bathing area.
