Abstract
This paper determines to clearify the structure of “sekitei”, or rock garden arrangement, based mainly from the author's career as a Niwashi, for the technique to arrange a garden from natural rocks has been handed down by “sense”, “experience” and “oral instruction”. First, a design vocabulary of rock arrangements were examined from “S akutei-ki”. On the other hand, by abstracting 37 groups of rocks from 11 Japanese rock gardens of “karesansuisekitei” style remaining today, the tendency of rock arrangements were clarified through quantitative analysis: the arrangement, height and visual angle were related to each other in the case of two or three rocks. As a result, this tendency met a coincidence with the previous design vocabulary from “Sakutei-ki”.
