Abstract

Matsushiro is an example of the castle town, and characterized by its extensively developped water networks. In one of the systems, recently named “Sensuiro” or “the garden water system, ” water flowed directly to the garden pond of a samurai residence to that of a neighbor's garden. This study aims to clarify to how the water system Sensuiro formed, and what extent it was built connecting garden ponds at Tonomachi (main district) during the Edo period. The following points become clear. By the middle of the Edo period, each samurai residence there probably began to form a garden with a watercourse and, next, a pond. And, it is considered likely that Sensuiro and gardens with ponds would be found all over the castle town, Matsushiro, at the end of the Edo period. But, in Meiji period, Sensuiro had decreased because of the change of social structure. Concerning its use, this water was used for the daily life, but, later, it was used too for the pond to keep the fish.
