Abstract

There is a mire community dominated by Sphagnum papillosum Lindb. in Utasai mire located in southern Hokkaido Island (42°38' N, 140°21' E, 95m in altitude). Hydrochemical variables affecting the distribution of the communities were examined using an ANOVA, and correlations among these variables were examined by a Factor Analysis. Variables controlling the communities were grouped into three;(1) water levels, (2) pH and concentration of minerals, and (3) concentration of total nitrogen and iron. High water level, pH and total nitrogen were considered to be most significant in each group, respectively. Optimal conditions showing the predominant coverage of Sph. papillosum were-10.5-0.0m (high water level), 4.44-4.67 (pH) and 0.938-1.156 mg/L (total nitrogen). Sph. papillosum was dominating only in the central part of a peat dome, where all three variables were in the optimal conditions. Total nitrogen, Na, Mg and Fe discharged from a roadside, and disturbed a part of the habitat. Accordingly, removal of the road is one of the effective measures to conserve Sph. papillosum.
