Liquid crystals show magnetic-field-induced reorientation due to their magnetic susceptibility anisotropy. The threshold of the magnetic-field-induced reorientation decreases by doping magnetic nanoparticles. However, since the liquid crystals are usually diamagnetic, the mixture with ferromagnetic particles tends to exhibit phase separation and the nanoparticle concentration is limited. Here, we report that magnetic nanoparticles can be dispersed with high concentration in paramagnetic liquid crystals instead of diamagnetic liquid crystals, and the new composites of paramagnetic liquid crystals and magnetic nanoparticles exhibit improved response to a magnetic-field.
