Abstract

A recent study has indicated that the alkyl chain of nTCB is fully disorderd even in the smectic E (SmE) phase and the rigid core and alkyl chain microscopically segregate each other. However, molecular dynamics in the SmE phase has been unknown so far, in contrast to other liquid crystalline phases such as nematic (N) and smectic A (SmA) phases. We investigate the molecular diffusion of a fluorescent molecule in SmE phase by employing the fluorescence recovery after photobreaching (FRAP), and compare the results with those in N and SmA phases.
