Abstract

The unsaturated carboxylic acid compounds containing diynylene and dienylene groups were synthesized and characterized. Their mesomorphic properties were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), wide-angle X-ray diffractions (XRD) under temperature control. The diacetylene compounds (mPhDA) form hydrogen-bonded dimers, which are further assembled to provide a disc-like mesogen unit. These discotic supramolecular mesogens stack in ordered and disordered columnar structures, producing discotic mesophases. On the other hand, the hydrogen-bonded dimers of the diene compounds (mPhDE, mDE) produced conventional nematic mesophases. The types of the liquid crystalline phases and their temperature ranges depended on the mesogenic structures.
