Abstract
Tetraarylethylene has a flat aromatic moiety, whose derivatives display discotic columnar phase because of pi-pi interaction between aromatic cores. In a mixture of a solvent and an amphiphilic compound that both hydrophilic and hydrophobic side chains are connected to this mesogen, the difference in affinity of the side chains to the solvent leads to lyotropic liquid crystals. In this research, the phase behavior, specially appearance of a lyotropic mesophase, of amphiphilic compounds with tetraarylethylene is evaluated.
