Abstract
In order to detect the leading factors of natural distribution pattern of four subalpine conifers along the gradient from Pacific Ocean side to Sea of Japan side in central Japan, 284 mountains were categorized into eight mountain types based on the composition of four conifers and vertical distribution of two firs in each mountain. As the results, it was clarified that natural distribution patterns of four subalpine conifers were determined by 1)the relation between the altitude of lower boundary of vertical distribution of each conifer and that of mountain summit, 2)the downward and upward shift of the lower boundary of Abies mariesii with snow depth and 3)the differences of adaptability to snow depth among other three conifers.
