- A Discussion for the Innovator's Dilemma
Abstract
PlayStation 3 (PS3) of Sony Computer Entertainment, released in 2006, could not gain enough market shares in the competition with Wii of Nintendo, released in the same year. The discussions of the causes of PS3 failure, including those applying the concept of The Innovator's Dilemma, were conducted mainly from the perspective of hardware. Meanwhile, there are few studies attempting to analyze the PS3 failure from the viewpoint of software. The purpose of this study is to elucidate PS3 failure focusing on indirect network effects from software on hardware. Our results demonstrated that indirect network effects of PS3 did not work and the reason was that most of software of PS3 was based on the concepts of existing software.
