Abstract
In this paper, I examine how the sound functions in religious settings of Black Pentecostal Churches in America, where singing, playing instruments, trance-dancing, and tongue speaking are practiced. Using the concept "participatory music" coined by Turino, an American ethnomusicologist, I will look at videotaped interaction among the congregation closely, and discuss the working hypothesis on how the sound, body, and emotion are connected.
