Description

Typhoon No.12 that stuck in September 2011 caused 28 fatalities and enormous damage to property in the Nachi River basin, Nachikatsuura City, Wakayama Prefecture. At least 8 debris flows occurred in residential areas, destroying houses and infrastructure. A large volume of earth and sand poured into the NachiRiver ,leading to the aggradation of the river bed and thus , the flooding Ichinono and Iseki(more than 3m) . Rainfall/water level data and field surveys indicate that these disasters mostly occurred late at night, from 2:30a.m. to shortly after 3:00a.m. on September 4. In this report, the river flow is simulated using computational model iRIC, and a comparison of simulated result and observed data is carried out to clarify the impact of debris flow to river flood.
