Abstract

In this study, we used a three-axis accelerometer sensor to elucidate the best hand washing technique for bacteria reduction, and also investigated hand washing skill acquisition and continuity. Twenty junior high school students were randomly assigned to an accelerometer system use group (monitor group) and a hand washing training instrument use group (control group). Both groups practiced hand washing for 30 minutes with soap and water, and were evaluated before, immediately after and 3 months after the practice. We evaluated the procedures and duration of washing, hand rubbing (acceleration of the forearms) and hand washing effect (reduction of bacteria). The procedures and duration of hand washing immediately after and 3 months after training were significantly higher than before, and the monitor group showed better skill acquisition and continuity. Reduction of bacteria, however, did not significantly differ between groups in any evaluation. The acceleration of the forearms in the monitor group was significantly better than in the control group both immediately after and 3 months after practice, and after the hand washing learning system the subjects rubbed their hands more vigorously. There was no correlation between bacteria reduction and technique, and no optimal bacteria-reducing technique could be elucidated.
