Abstract

This study aimed to clarify nurses' attitudes towards communicating with patients who are concerned about death. The subjects were 34 with laboratory experience at a hospital. Self-administered questionnaires were completed, the Internal Working Models scale and the Coping in Work scale. Additionally the Personal Attitude Construct (PAC) analysis was used to qualitatively evaluate nurses' attitudes. In the Coping in Work scale, the Dependence score of the Avoidant group was significantly lower than the Secure and Ambivalent groups. The Resignation Tendency score of Ambivalent group was also significantly higher than the Secure group. From the PAC analysis, nurses' attitudes were classified into two categories, namely "Attitude towards palliative care" and "attitude accompanying palliative care". This result showed no differences in nurses' attitudes to their personality characteristics identified by the Internal Working Models. But the result of the priority ranking of image items in the PAC analysis showed differences in nurses' attitudes to their personality characteristics identified by the Internal Working Models. The nurses exhibited different priorities in patient care for patients concerned about death depending on personality characteristics identified by Internal Working Models in this study.
