Abstract

The present study clarified spirituality and mood in patients with mental disorders, and examined the patients' perception of meaning of illness. The participants were 13 hospital in-patients with mental disorders who received a single 60-minute interview conducted by investigators majoring in psychiatric nursing. The patients answered the FACIT-Sp to measure their level of spirituality and the POMS to measure mood. They then narrated regarding their understanding of the meaning of their illness. The patients were separated into high and low score groups based on the FACIT-Sp score for content analysis. As for the POMS, the score of "Depression" was higher than the standard score, and the score of "Vigor" was lower than the standard. In the group with high FACIT-Sp scores, "Positive cognition toward illness and acceptance of their lives," "Satisfaction with life," "Search for the cause of illness," and "Reminiscence about life" were chosen. In the group with low FACIT-Sp scores, "Burden to their families," "Severe symptoms and treatment of the illness," "Disadvantage in social life," and "Reconstruction of life" were selected. These results suggest that an intervention to increase spirituality is needed for patients with mental disorders who have a low FACIT-Sp score.
