Description
Mid-chiasmal tumors that damage the crossed nerve fibers cause compressive optic neuropathy with temporal hemianopia. The crossed nerve fibers originating from the nasal hemiretina and penetrating the optic nerve horizontally are lost. On the contrary, the uncrossed fibers, which originate in the temporal hemiretina and penetrate the optic nerve through the superior and inferior bundles, are preserved. Such a pattern of fiber loss can be identified as band atrophy. Optic tract syndrome shows asymmetric optic disc atrophy in both eyes. Optical coherence tomography(OCT)enables quantitative measurements of circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness and inner retinal thickness of the macula. This article summarizes recent OCT findings in eyes with optic neuropathy at the chiasma or optic tract syndrome.
