Abstract

This study examines the structure, characteristics, and correlates of caregiving affirmation in primary caregivers of communitydwelling ALS patients. A questionnaire was administered to 233 such caregivers; 93 valid responses were analyzed.Factor analysis showed that caregiving affirmation comprised three factors: satisfaction with care conditions, self-growth, and willingness to continue caregiving. Multiple regression analysis showed that satisfaction with care conditions was high among caregivers whose patients were unable to move on their own and those who had positive acceptance of their caregiving role and coped by seeking public support. Self-growth was high among those who completed tasks at an appropriate pace, had positive acceptance of their caregiving role, and coped by seeking public support. Willingness to continue caregiving was high among caregivers whose patients were unable to move on their own, whose current relationship with their patients was good, who showed positive acceptance of their caregiving role, and who coped by seeking public support. To support caregivers in the future, it is necessary to consider the patient-caregiver relationship and thereby develop strategies to improve caregivers' capacity to deal with various difficulties.
