Abstract

The purpose of this study was to consider how "life stressors" , "neurotic tendencies" and "compulsiveness about sleeponset insomnia" are relevant to and affect sleep quality by constructing a model of mental health in university students. Subjects included 253 students of A College who completed the Japanese Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-J) as a measure of sleep quality. In addition, exploratory model analysis and covariance structure analysis were conducted to develop models. The results revealed a direct relationship between PSQI-J total score and the following two factors : "life stressors" and "compulsiveness about sleep-onset insomnia". "Compulsiveness about sleep-onset insomnia" showed an intermediate relationship to PSQI-J total score ("compulsiveness about sleep-onset insomnia" (β =.411, p<.001)). PSQI-J total score was explained by three factors, including "neurotic tendencies", "compulsiveness about sleep-onset insomnia", and "life stressors" (contribution rate 30.5%). Sleep quality had a direct influence on mental health. The present results suggest the need to consider a policy addressing "compulsiveness about sleep-onset insomnia" and "life stressors" to improve sleep quality and mental health in university students.
