Description
Precursors of externalizing problem behavior among 10 year-old children were examined in a sample (N=400; mean age 10.52 years) whose mothers had participated in a longitudinal study of family relationship during the pregnancy. Predictors included : behavior patterns of the child observed in infancy, financial situation of the family, and parental attitude towards child rearing. It was shown that the externalizing problem behaviors develop in the process where a number of factors interact with each other in the child development. The result also showed that a father's positive attitude toward parenting and a mother's sense of trust in her spouse tended to suppress the emergence of child externalizing problem behavior, overcoming the influence of the precursor variables. The implications of the present study were discussed in terms of child mental health issues.
