Environmental noise generated by equipment and the like includes low-frequency sound of less than 20 Hz(also called “infrasound”),which can be difficult to recognize. Hence, existing psychological evaluation methods have the issue of not being able to understand its influence sufficiently. On the other hand,it is hoped that brain-waves can be applied in methods to examine the influence of low-frequency sound because they can directly capture the environmental influence as physiological data. With this as a background, this study comparatively examines the brain-wave voltages of 15 subjects, with and without exposure to low-frequency sound, with the aim of clarifying the influence of low-frequency sound on brain-waves. For the study, experiments were conducted under two scenarios:brain-wave characteristics under standard environment which the noise environment of a quiet residential area (experiment 1) and brain-wave characteristics when listening to low-frequency sound (experiment 2). Three types of low-frequency sounds were presented as conditions-10 Hz/70 dB-SPL,10 Hz/80 dB-SPL,and 30 Hz/70 dB-SPL-and four components of the brain-wave were investigated - θ-waves,α-waves,β -waves,and γ-waves. The results of the experiment showed that only the α-wave voltage at 10 Hz/80dB-SPL was below the confidence interval (significance level 10 %)for the α-wave voltage in a standard environment. Therefore, the experiment suggests that low-frequency sounds of 10 Hz/80 dB-SPL have some kind of an influence on human brain-waves.
