Description

To develop a new method to quantitatively analyze of internal echo information, the average standard deviations of echo-histograms were compared with the echo patterns and clinical diagnoses. Transrectal ultrasonic images of 106 prostatic disease cases were obtained with a biplane scanner. For echo pattern analysis, the average standard deviation for heterogeneous patterns was larger than the average standard deviation of homegeneous patterns in longitudinal and transverse images. In longitudinal images, the average standard deviation for benign prostatic hyperplasia with calcification was statistically (P<0.01) larger than the average standard deviation for other diseases. In transverse images, the average standard deviations for prostatic carcinoma and benign prostatic hyperplasia with calcification were statistically (P<0.01) larger than the average standard deviations for benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis. These findings correlated well with those obtained using the current diagnostic criteria of prostatic diseases. As a quantitative method, the standard deviation of echo-histograms in transverse images is concluded to be useful for echo pattern analysis and ultrasonic diagnosis of prostatic deseases.
