The need of the present study arose during the repeated discussions by the science teachers of upper secondary schools for investigating "Science I", a newly established subject, which aims to be a synoptic natural science by its interdisplinary approach. Through the discussion, a considerable communication gap was remarked among the science teachers themselves, particularly between biology teachers and physics teachers. The present study was initiated to investigate the origin of this communication gap. An analysis of the questionaires distributed to about 180 teachers (biology/physics/chemistry/earth science teachers) of the upper secondary schools in Aichi Prefecture revealed really significant differences in their scientific attitudes. The majority of biology teachers differ apparently from physics teachers (1) in their interest in nature (the former is strongly interested in the visible and delicate variety in nature, whereas the latter is chiefly attracted by the simplified and mathematical structure of nature); (2) in their scientific concepts, e.g. methodology of science, experiment, modeling and so on. These characteristics would be those of the science discipline in which the teacher is involved. The communication gap presumably comes from the fact that science teachers scarcely notice the above differences among themselves. The present paper also detected significant differences in their attitudes to molecular biology, ecology, nature preservation and other important topics of biological science even among biology teachers, especially between young and old generations. The strikingly rapid progress of biological science in the past three decades appears to be responsible for the confusion in the biology teachers' attitude.
