In solving problems in proportional situations, it is often crucial to coordinate two referents by forming a unit. The purpose of this study is to compare/contrast performance and thinking across U.S. and Japanese students, especially the nature and role of unit in their thinking processes, and to detect factors that influence their thinking. Thirty-five students in grade 6 were given four problems. From the analysis of their responses, the following points were identified. (i) The students' responses differed commonly according to the problem. A key descriptor was the unit being formed in their problem representation. (ii) A major difference between the groups was seen in the meaning ascribed to the unit by the students. The U.S. students ascribed more concrete meanings to the units, whereas the Japanese students tended to ascribe formal meanings. (iii) Students' past learning experiences in schools as well as several deeply-rooted socio-cultural factors were detected to underlie the differences. Based on the results, educational implications were also made.
