Abstract
We compared the depth of superficial esophageal cancer (SEC) and the interval of endoscopic examination with iodine staining method (ISM) . Twelve SEC patients detected with ISM, whose SEC were denied at the previous examination with or without ISM, were divided into two groups. Each group consisted of 6 patients examined with (group A) or without (group B) ISM, respectively.
In group A, 5 out of 6 patients had the depth of m1 and one had m3. Average interval of the examination in group A was 29 months (range : 18-36 months) . In contrast with group A, one had the depth of m2 and 5 had the invasion of m3 or submucosa. Average interval was 38 months (range : 14-60 months) in group B.
ISM appears to be useful for detection of m1 and m2 which are difficult to find with a conventional endoscopic observation. We recommend ISM at an interval of about 24 months for subjects without unstained area. This should be clarified by a prospective controlled study.
