The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct A.Gorz's theory of technology in his theory of need. He says that the strategy of working class in new capitalism must depend on "qualitative" needs (for exemple, a need to develop man's abilities). Objects of these needs are not means to live but ends to live. Therefore a concept of "qualitative" needs is one relevant to how to live, and cannot be free from value judgement. These needs as ends to live depend on means to satisfy them. Of course technology is a means to an end. But when an end is "qualitative", a means must be "qualitative" too and cannot be free from value judgement. Gorz's theory of technology, though he does not say it clearly, consists in makingtechnology more "qualitative". However, what is to make technology "qualitative"? He takes technology as a practice on its essential level. This means that technology can be transformed by workers' project, and at the same time that society can have an effect on it. Technology in capitalism is a means to satisfy capitalists' "qualitative" needs (i. e. domination over workers). A present "form" of technology is defined by social relations. According to Gorz, therefore, it is necessary to release technology from the capitalistic fetters. But in my opinion it is insufficient. Besides it is necessary to transform the cognition of man which reflects to technology. For present technology is based on a mechanical model of man. Consequently technology depending on Gorz's theory of need cannot succeed to capitalistic technology and there will be a discontinuity of technology between capitalism and socialism.
